Now that you have made your complete drug list, and modified mealtimes and told friends and family how they can be of help, you should be feeling better already.

Here are 3 more mistakes I see too often:

Mistake #4: Too much refined carbs.  When it feels like such a chore to prepare food, eat, and then clean up,  it’s easy to reach for snacks that are all carbohydrates (starches). A diet balanced with protein, healthy fats, and carbs will give you more energy and give you the vitamins and minerals you need. Be careful with pasta, chips, and bread. Instead, reach for cut-up veggies, boiled eggs, fresh fruits, and nuts, if your doctor says all these things are OK.

Mistake #5: Not getting regular checkups and medication reviews. “Why should I go for an annual check-up? My doctor just says stay on the same medications, or takes an X-Ray to tell me nothing much has changed”.  If this is you, I understand. But, every year new inhalers and new protocols come out to help people with lung disease. Take your new, updated medication list to your doctor and discuss if there is anything new or different that might help you breathe a little easier.

Mistake #6: Holding your breath with strenuous activity.  Learning correct breathing techniques is imperative to ensure your muscles (and your brain and heart!) have enough oxygen to complete your chosen activity. Holding your breath with activities will only make you more tired.
