The Real Dirt on E-Cigs and Vaping

I see it everywhere. Young kids and young adults thinking that electronic cigarettes, or “e-cigs”, are a better choice than tobacco smoke. I also see older folks trying to quit smoking, so they vape instead.
Nicotine is still nicotine. Addictive and poisonous.
What’s really in that liquid anyway?

One of the hot topics at this year’s American Thoracic Society meeting was Electronic cigarettes. In one abstract published and presented at the conference, Dr. Laura Crotty-Alexander’s latest lab results show that the vapor from e-cigs can triple Methicillin-Resistant Staph Aureus’ resistance to antibiotic therapy. MRSA is a bacteria that can cause severe health problems and is very difficult to treat.
MRSA generally colonizes in the nasal passages of healthy humans. But, thrown off-balance, it can quickly cause an infection that spreads to the lungs, and other areas of the body.
MRSA bacteria have their own defense mechanism, and exposure to E- vapor makes them more infectious and aggressive.
In other studies, E-vapor has also been shown to decrease our own immune cells’ capability to kill off foreign bacteria.

Besides containing nicotine and being an insult to the lungs, there is a far greater danger: young children, enticed by pretty colors and scents, get into the non-childproof bottles and ingest the liquid. The liquid is also readily absorbed through the skin, so all a child has to do is spill it on themselves and they can still be severely poisoned.

Does this mean it does not contain lead? (Another vaping concern)

I’m sorry to say, but I bet you won’t feel like you look really cool wearing that hospital gown…
